Lionel Trains Operating Gantry Crane

Detailed instruction on how to move the Gantry Crane back and forth are in the November 2009 “CLASSIC TOY TRAINS” magazine. This is a video of the Lionel 2316 N&W Operating Gantry Crane on my home layout. I have modified the crane to include a homemade electromagnet and the addition of a simple motor control to allow back and forth operation. The crane has been set on 2 027 rails.

New gantry for overhead wires that power the electric trains. Taken through the window of a moving train, just out of Wellington station.

Extensive work is underway on the Wellington regional railway in preparation for the arrival of new electric trains in 2010. Many new substations are being built. The overhead cables and tracks are being upgraded.

On frosty mornings the overhead power lines get covered with frost. When the first trains of the day go up the line their pantographs arc where they press against the wires, sometime spectacularly if there’s been a heavy frost. Here a gantry is lit by arcing as the train pulls out of Silverstream Station heading north to Upper Hutt. The train is quite well lit by the downward-directed station lighting, but a photo taken just before the arcing barely picks up the gantry.
