Return of Albury Passenger Services: Australian Trains

On 25 June 2011, V/Line operated a special between Melbourne and Albury to officially open passenger train services on the standard gauge following gauge conversion. Following arrival at Albury, the train operated several shuttles for the locals between Albury and the new Wodonga station. Interestingly, N453 and N470 operated the last broad gauge passenger services from and to Albury in November 2008 © 2011 James Brook

OneSteel Whyalla Tramway – Iron Ore on the Narrow Gauge: Australian Trains

The OneSteel (formerly BHP) 3’6″ gauge system dates back to 1901 when the line was opened to Iron Knob to transport ore from the mine there back to Whyalla. A branch line was constructed in 1930 to Iron Baron and then extended to Iron Duke in 1990. The line from Middleback Junction to Iron Knob is now out of use with the closure of the mine in 1998, but the line to Iron Duke sees multiple train movements per day. Rail operations have now been contracted out to Genesee & Wyoming Australia who run the line with a mixture of former BHP DE locomotives (rebuilt in the 90’s by Morrison Knudsen), Alco DA/900 class locos (driver only 830’s) and CK locomotives (formerly Victorian T class Clyde/GM diesels) Rail action in this video was filmed on Tuesday 5 October 2010 and begins with shunting operations near the steel works at Whyalla. Several empty trains are then followed out along the line before finally capturing a loaded train departing Middleback Junction right on sunset Shunting around Whyalla 0:00 1303 – 904 Whyalla to Middleback Junction 4:10 1303 – 904 Middleback Junction 5:35 CK3 – 1302 – CK4 Norrie Avenue, Whyalla 6:17 CK3 – 1302 – CK4 13 mile marker 7:29 CK3 – 1302 – CK4 Whyalla to Kimba Rd in the Middleback Ranges 8:44 1304 – 902 powering away from Whyalla 9:22 1304 – 902 between Whyalla and Middleback Junction 10:20 904 – 1303 depart Middleback Junction after a cross 11:19 © 2010 James Brook

Australian Trains: Old EMDs with POTA Freight to Tocumwal, 16/7/2011

During the July school holidays, the opportunity was taken to shut down the Bendigo line for Regional Rail Link works and the Sunbury electrification project, as a result, the POTA freight that regularly runs to Denilliquin was diverted to Tocumwal (from where road transport would move the containers the relatively short distance to Denilliquin). This video features 9371 down freight on Saturday 16 July 2011 with Steamrail’s S313 leading CFCLA’s B76 in the Metro version of their livery between Murchison East and Tocumwal just over the border in NSW. © 2011 James Brook

Black Springs – Australian Model Railway Layout – Box Hill 2004 鉄道模型

HO scale layout featuring lots of Australian prototype trains from the VR and AN stables. Although the layout ran trains from different eras the train compositions were just what you’d expect to see from the lineside in Western Victoria or SA. Long freight and passenger trains were regularly seen, along with smaller freight trains with a mix of bogie and 4 wheel wagons. The “Ghan” NR seen on this layout was a pre-production sample of the loco now available from Austrains, and certainly turned a lot of heads whenever it ran past. The AN silver/green CLP was also a very nice loco, and for a bit of variety we get to see some steam action too. Filmed at box hill exhibition 2004.

Wingham – NSWGR HO scale – Australian Model Railway Layout

Wingham is a HO scale model railway layout based on the actual location in NSW. The layout was built by the late Rodney James and was a popular exhibition layout during the early 1990’s. This footage was shot on VHS film in the early 1990’s at the Camberwell AMRA exhibition. Further information about this layout can be found in issue 3 of the Australian magazine “Branchline Modeller” which was published in 1995.

El Zorro livery loco’s – Real or HO scale model? – Australian Railways

Hundreds of hours of modelling were required to recreate the Dynon freight yards in miniature. Well not quite. I’ve manipulated some footage of real trains to see if I could give it a model like appearance using the “tilt shift” filter available in “Magic Bullet Looks” from Red Giant Software.
