Question by Dragongirl: 2 strict on my dogs….?
I have a 25 week old male intact reg. (trialing) border collie. I will be trialing him this summer, and will be going to a clinic with Fonsie Bason (african trainer) and a few others. I have started him lightly with little pressure on sheep and he is doing WONDERFUL. I work allot with my 2 year old male reg. intact cattle dog and my border collie and both are reliable on and off leash, and are very friendly OR neutral to all dogs, depending on the situation and the personality of both dogs. Fighting IS NOT tolerated in the least. My male cattle dog is in PPT.
I have had a few people tell me i am to strict with my dogs, and that one day they will bite me for not having enough freedom. Im curious am i to strict with my dogs these are some of the things i do with my dogs as training “touch ups” or just to make sure they know i am alpha and they are to listen.
Sit before eating
Randomly have sit sometimes during meals. (not everyday)
Wait for a certain amount of time before being released from kennels(crates)
Walk beside/behind me on and off leash. NO PULLING
No couch or beds. They sleep on doggie beds on the floor.
Raw hides and toys (valuables) are not to be guarded from me.
Umbilical till dog can behave in the house, or crates if unable to be loose.
20 mins twice a day EACH on basic commands.
Not allowed in the kitchen or bedrooms or dinning room.
And a few other things.
My dogs seem happy enough….but im a little worried i am being to strict.
another thing: When i say stay and walk out of the room i EXPECT the dog to stay where he was when i left. I can leave my dogs in a bath and they wait etc.
Yes they get like 3 hours at the dog park and both do agility, fly ball and my heeler does dock dogs and disc dogs. They have an outdoor pen to play and be goofs in (2 acres.

i have alot of people over to the house, some who dont really like/want dog hair on them. Keeping them out of the main living room (we have 2 in the house) Keeps that room clean as well as the kitchen. They generaly have free roam if we arent busy (the pup stays on umbilical)
Also, he is only just PLAYING, we dont force him to do it. We let him run and play on the courses we dont make him race. We also keep him on a lunge line when letting him play.

maybe your should give it treats and play with it instead of commands 24/7. with dog the only commands she needs is : down, sit, lay and stay. just start out with those.
