Question by Das S: What is a good hobby/ project to keep your mind working?
I’m an academic. I have always enjoyed learning and keeping my mind very busy. Now I am unemployed, and the inactivity is killing me!

What is a good hobby or project that requires a lot of thinking?

Why has my Lionel train stopped working?

Monday, April 9th, 2012

Question by Lode Vaduh: Why has my Lionel train stopped working?
I have a Postwar 685 ATSF Hudson steam model train (its not a really a steam engine, its just called that- it has an electric motor) which stopped working. Whenever I put it on the tracks and tried it out, sparks would come from the motor and there’d be a buzzing noise. The motor doesn’t rotate. The track is clean, and I cleaned the motor nicely with alcohol. What could be wrong?

There is a short circuit somewhere.

Dismantle the locomotive and check carefully for electric contact where there shouldn’t be.

Either a wire is touching where it shouldn’t or else, a wheel is touching the chassis where it shouldn’t and should be insulated from the mainframe.

37 Working a Ballast Train From Hillside Quarry Video No 21

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

The video shows four empty “Falcon” ballast wagons shunted into the quarry by a class 37 locomotive which belongs to the “preservation society”. They will then be filled with ballast and delivered to the quarry station ready for the track laying teams on Monday morning..Please make a comment and perhaps give me some more ideas. If you have enjoyed the video then perhaps you would consider “subscribing” and you could then receive email updates from Hillside Model Railway…..Thank you.

Model train not working, need help.?

Monday, March 5th, 2012

Question by naillady118: Model train not working, need help.?
My son has an HO model train he got from is dad a long time ago. He hs power from the track and prower from the train itself. But when he puts them together to try to run it, it will not work. Anyone know why it might not work? Thanks

Answer by Mike M.
There could be several reasons as to why your son is having this problem with his model train. One thing he needs to do is make sure the wires from the track are properly connected to the correct terminals on his power-pack, sometimes referred to as a “transformer”. They need to be connected to the DC terminals and not the AC ones, that could be the primary cause of his situation. Also, what sort of track does he have? If he has brass rail track he should replace it with nickel silver rail track as that can be cleaned more easily and doesn’t corrode like brass rail would. One more thing I’d like to suggest is that your son have his locomotive properly cleaned and lubricated, if he needs help with that then I suggest he go to your local hobby shop and talk to anyone there who has experience in the model railroading hobby. Good Luck.

World’s Smallest Working Model Train Layout

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

This is a Z scale model of an N scale train layout–a model of a model. And it works. I built it to sit in the window of a Z scale hobby shop on my “real” train layout, the James River Branch. (By the way, it’s about one-third the size of the last one I made.) You can read how it was built here: jamesriverbranch.net The model has been rephotographed in HD. See www.youtube.com

Question about a working visa/permit in canada?

Monday, July 11th, 2011

Question by Clarity.: Question about a working visa/permit in canada?
I’m wanting to be an au pair in canada. I was looking up the conditions of being a live-in aupair, and it said
“You must have six months of full-time training in a classroom setting.”

I study full time, but it is by distance because I can’t be in a classroom setting where I live. There isn’t that possibility. I do do it by a proper, recognized course though. Is there still any chance of proving I study full time? Or because i’m doing it by distance, is that opportunity gone?

thank you.

Best answer:

Answer by Ramon
Doing any course by distance is NOT considered full time for immigration purposes to Canada

you do need to be at a bricks and mortar (concrete built) school

My Ho Scale trains are not working.?

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Question by Jeff T: My Ho Scale trains are not working.?
I have a couple of HO scale trains that have not been ran since the late 90’s.I have just bought the ez track train track system.I have tried 4 of my trains on it and only one works. What can I do to get them running again?? Do I need to get them repaired or get new ones?

Best answer:

Answer by Steven D
The might need to be serviced. You can gently take them apart and lightly oil them. If you’re not sure how to do it check with the local hobby shop or model railroad club. You can take two wires from the transformer and touch them to the opposite side wheels and see if they will run with that option. Some times it takes a direct jolt to get the motor turning again. The wheels could be dirty lightly scuff them with an emery board and clean off the oxidization making a better connection to the tracks. Welcome back to the hobby! Here’s a link to what’s new:http://www.trains.com/trc/
