It’s Christmas Eve! Hope everyone is well rested and ready for a nice holiday – here are 12 images from the Chicago Botanical Garden’s Wonderland Express that I took earlier this week. This is an annual exhibit of myriad Chicago landmarks remade in natural, local plant material, replete with G-scale trains snaking throughout the herbivorous landscapes. Check out the details on the Chicago Botanical Garden’s page. The exhibit was free on Tuesdays (until the 22nd) and remains open until the third of January. Some of these displays are absolutely amazing – accurate and superbly detailed throughout. I didn’t get all the displays here, but I have most of the more spectacular and recognizable (you’ll notice I have two images from the University of Chicago’s Rockefeller Chapel). Head out to the botanical gardens and check the exhibit out – or stay here and have a look through these photos from the comfort of your chair. See if you can spot all the landmarks – and for the photography nuts who care – all of these were taken as single exposures at ISO 800-1600 and turned into HDRs with photomatix and some photoshop love.

Powerhouse Museum 2011 Photo competition entry – diesel-electric category

Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn Deh4/4 locomotive 51 has just arrived in Göschenen from Andermatt (Switzerland) on 19 December 2008. We just don’t have a landscape like this in Australia, and so I took every single opportunity I could get to try and capture trains in a winter wonderland setting. After initially ruling this photo out of my Powerhouse competition entries because it didn’t feel "arty" enough, I’ve gone back to this shot because my heart and my gut told me too. To me it just whispers calm and coziness.
