Marsden Rail Volume 30 – Sheffield to North Derbyshire

Monday, February 11th, 2013

The programme starts at Sheffield, with film taken at the now-closed Victoria Station between 1932 and 1979 showing a wide variety of steam traction, ranging from Great Central Railway and Great Northern Railway designs through to British Railways Britannia Pacifics. The unique 1500dc-electric system that linked Sheffield to Manchester via the Woodhead Route is also featured, with the BR-built electric locomotives shown at various locations on the tortuous line, which closed in 1981. Another electrically-powered transport system could also be found in Sheffield in the 1950s, in the form of the citys original tram system and a film made in 1958 from Beauchief to the city centre is an interesting reminder of the period. The rest are Lionel Conventional Classics that have been issued in the last few years. Should be about 5 chapters when complete. Enjoy the Trains! You can almost smell the ozone & smoke pellets! Classic Standard Gauge Trains – Volume Two

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Here’s the second video showing original standard gauge trains in action on a double reversing loop layout. The Lionel No. 38 is almost a hundred years old, yet still hammers its way around the track, pulling an orange consist of Nos. 32, 34, 35 and 36 early Lionel passenger cars. The Ives 3235 is pulling a consist of cars 170, 171, and 172. I have been looking for a green 171 for about ten years, but all I can find is the brown/tan colour. The Ives runs the smoothest of all the old trains, due to its cast iron frame and unstoppable motor. A word about the music – these trains were the “Plain Janes” of their era – no State Set or Blue Comet here, just affordable trains for lucky kids in the first quarter of the 20th century. (YouTube has since shut down my soundtrack due to “copyright infringement” of Bobby Darin’s music – I’m sure I was doing them a lot of damage) Notice this time I let the trains speak for themselves, no artificial motor noises. Hope you enjoy the result.
