Why do train tracks make a tingling or ringing noise when a train is approaching?

Monday, March 18th, 2013

Question by G.: Why do train tracks make a tingling or ringing noise when a train is approaching?
Whenever a train is approaching, the tracks emit a sound I describe as “tingling”. At first I thought it had to do with electric current being passed through the third rail, but I hear this sound on non-electric tracks too. A cursory web search revealed no information about this.

My theory is that the sound is due to structural resonance from the train’s vibrations. Does anyone know for sure?

Welded tracks carry the sound of the train, the steel from which the tracks are made is a good conductor of the vibrations from the wheels, traction motors etc.

Hence the ‘singing’ sound when a train approaches.

Do you mean three rails with the outer ones 1.25 inches apart? That would be O-guage. (Typical of Lionel Trains.)

Consider the assumption that the camera should remain static. If there are (e.g.) 999 ways in which you could move your camera around during a shot, then by NOT doing that, you confine yourself to only be able to take one-tenth of one percent (0.001) of all possible photos. Why constrain the creative space like that?

no, the tracks ae to wide, also alot of the time it is the overhead cable that is love not the tracks on the ground. If the tracks on the ground were live they would be shorting all the time in bad weather and through cars that drive over them

Question by colts_rock_1: how do you hook lionel pennsylvania flyer train tracks up to the transformer where you control it .?
i lost the directions i have the cord to connect the two but i dont know how

Best answer:

Answer by Dilbert
It should be obvious from the cord. Does it any bare wires, or just connectors? If it just has connectors, they aren’t likely to fit the wrong way, so you just connect them whatever way they fit, and it should work fine. If it has any bare wires, there should be screw terminals or post terminals for them. You just loosen those, wrap the bare end of the wire, and tighten. You’re really not likely to get it wrong, so just try it, how it looks like it ought to go, and see if it works.

Does it really matter if I use trackbed with HO model railroad tracks (Code 100)?

Tuesday, September 11th, 2012

Question by AJ: Does it really matter if I use trackbed with HO model railroad tracks (Code 100)?
I was deciding on whether or not to get some track bed because I’m getting some things that involve trackwork for Christmas. I was debating and decided to ask the people of Yahoo Answers for this. So, if roadbed really does make a difference, what would be the best brand and/or type to go with? Also, what would I want to do about a bridge because I’m planning for a bridge on my layout? Would I just cut if off at the bridge section, or bring the roadbed through the bridge? Please let me know if I need to add details. Thanks for your input, A.J. (Gonfiantini)

Answer by PM Railfan
well roadbed is nice. gives you a base to not only lay track, but also to give a shape to ballasting it. however it is totally not required. ive always used Atlas roadbed and never had a problem with it. as far as your bridge goes youll want to end the roadbed. i wouldnt carry it across the bridge. it wouldnt look right and in most cases ( depending on the type of bridge ) you wouldnt need it. a stone arch would use it as opposed to an open girder type which wouldnt. actually some real bridges you can see right thru the tracks down below. remember, its not the ballast that supports the track. as bridges prove. its the roadbed under the ballast. but in model railroading that support is not required at all. its mostly for sound deadening and looks. somefolks actually lay track right on homasote or other soft sound deadening media.
