Trains At Canal Street In Downtown Chicago July 14, 2011

Wednesday, December 26th, 2012

Sorry about how long this video is. I did not want to upload this video in parts. The next thing I did after watching trains at the Amtrak yard near 21st Street was go to canal Street. This is one place I have always wanted to railfan my entire life. I finally got the chance to do so. Ross (94amtrak), his dad, & I headed over to watch trains here. I was more then pleased with the number of Metra,Amtrak, & CTA “L” trains I caught. We were only here for about an hour & half & this is how much I saw! Ross & I liked the location so much we went to canal street a few hours before I had to leave on the eastbound Amtrak Capital Limited on July 18th. That will be a video I will upload in the future I strongly recomend Canal Street to any railfan who visits Chicago. In this video you will also see Metra F40PH #163 which I caught at Canal Street at 11:57 in the video. The next video from my Chicago area trip will be of the Metra Electric. 4-21-10 *CORRECTION* Although I said Q390 in the video, this is actually Z390. Gadsden, Al – Locust Street With a little free time after class, I headed to Gadsden to see if anything interesting was going on with NS or the ATN. The scanner crackled to life with “3 step – Z390.” Awesome! A train I’ve wanted to see for a long time! Great SP power up front too! After a little switching in the yard, I catch the train traveling down the middle of Locust St. and crossing the Coosa river bridge bound for Birmingham. Who Killed The Electric Street Car?

Monday, December 3rd, 2012

In this excerpt from Stephen Talbot’s “Heartbeat of America” (1993), Christopher Snell explains how GM conspired with oil & tire companies to kill streetcars in cities all across America in order to create an inferior bus system that would guarantee the sale of tires, gas, and bus parts for an eternity. As Snell explains, “They would go in, buy a street railway system. They’d convert it to General Motors Buses. The General Motors busses would run on Firestone tires. And they’d be fueled by, in the east, Phillips, and in the west, Standard Oil California.” In 1947, according to Snell, the Federal Government charged GM and its partners with criminal conspiracy. The result was that GM was fined 00 and its top official was fined a single dollar. Compare this to the over 150 billion dollar project currently in the works of trying to build a railway system for Los Angeles today.

Sunday, August 5th, 2012

You see my 25-ton switching at Third Street Industrial District. The crew has spotted a tank car at Central Gas & Supply and is about to spot the pulled covered hopper again. And they pick up a covered cement hopper. They have to run at Third Street / Commerce Street a switch back. You see at 1:50 the reverse for the Kadee coupler. 🙂

Owosso – 1225 Steam Engine Train – South Cedar Street Crossing

Sunday, March 25th, 2012

An excursion run leaving Owosso, Michigan, late in the afternoon on November 28, 2008. The train is pulled by the 800000 pound (including tender) Pere Marquette 1225 locomotive ― the largest operating steam engine locomotive in Michigan. Steven Spielberg’s production company filmed the exterior sights and sounds of the 1225 for the computer rendering of the movie, “Polar Express,” and Lionel Model Trains has also recorded the sounds of the 1225 for its new electric toy model train, “The 1225” ― the namesake of Owosso’s 1225. Owosso, Michigan, is the headquarters of the Steam Railroading Institute, which includes a museum and other facilities. The institute’s 3.5 acre grounds also hold a roundhouse, the Pere Marquette 1225, the 82000 pound Flagg Coal Company steam switch engine, the 136000 pound Mississippian steam locomotive (under restoration), plus many train cars and other rolling stock from railroads in the United States and Canada. The Owosso-based Steam Railroading Institute was the location of TrainFestival 2009, which was celebrated from July 24th thru July 26th, 2009. The festival drew approximately 36000 visitors to Owosso from around the world. On display were additional steam-era equipment, including the 1225’s sister steam locomotive – Nickel Plate Road’s 765 – and The Southern Pacific Number 4449: The Daylight. Owosso, Michigan, is also the headquarters of the Great Lakes Central Railroad, which provides freight service to Northern and Southern Michigan, and
