CV&WS model railroad club 2/9/12: Photo Freight testing

Alex (BRW752) was setting up the yard for this month’s Operating Session. One of the trains up for grabs by the crews is a photo freight powered by a Pennsylvania M-1! Nice loco, never got to drive it yet, but from what i heard, its a good puller. The L&W railroad loaned cars for this special train, after all, they specialize in older rolling stock and locos! Rhätische Bahn Ge4/4-III electric locomotive 646 arrives in Filisur (Switzerland) with an evening train from St Moritz to Chur on Sunday night 21 December 2008. Although the Hotel Grishuna offers tempting refuge from the cold, the lone passenger off the recently-arrived train from Davos (sitting behind the photographer) is setting off for the somewhat treacherous walk down to the village below. Although Switzerland’s famed Albula Line is very easy on the eye at best of times, I went out of my way to try and capture it at night, for that is when it seems to take on some true magic. And yes, it was cold!

Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn Deh4/4 locomotive 51 has just arrived in Göschenen from Andermatt (Switzerland) on 19 December 2008. We just don’t have a landscape like this in Australia, and so I took every single opportunity I could get to try and capture trains in a winter wonderland setting. After initially ruling this photo out of my Powerhouse competition entries because it didn’t feel "arty" enough, I’ve gone back to this shot because my heart and my gut told me too. To me it just whispers calm and coziness.
