Question by Laura: Do you have any tips for a new owner on kitten care?
Thanks for your time! I currently own a beautiful russian blue mix named George, whom I adopted as an adult. I have never cared for a kitten before, only adult cats. I found a 5 1/2 week old kitten outside yesterday. I live in Massachusetts, so it is freezing and snowy. Long story short, I took her to the vet and she checked out healthy as a horse. Negative for everything except worms (wahoo!) including leukemia, fleas..etc. Her name is Genevieve and she is all black with green eyes and a tiny white locket on her chest. Right now she weighs 1.25lbs but is consistently eating a lot since I rescued her, so I’m not worried about that. I didn’t even have to litterbox train her. I put her in it once when we got home and she just understood immediately. No accidents yet!
Do you have any tips for caring for a young kitten like this? She has food and litter given to me by the vet, a warm place to sleep, plenty of water, and plenty of love. I have a couple toys for her but she doesn’t seem too interested in them yet, so I will buy more when she becomes more playful.
How should I introduce them to each other?
How long should it take?
What if they do not get along?
What about teething? Toys? Tips?
Can I “train” her to stay as friendly as she is now?
Will bringing a new kitten into the house stress out my adult cat?
Anything else would be so helpful. Thanks!
