Question by Oke: What kind of education(degree) does one need to be able to build electric heaters?
Where can one acquire such a training?

None at all. Go visit the factory in china where the heaters are made. None of the people assembling the heaters have degrees. Not a single one. I don’t think the supervisor does either.

What safety measures do I need to take when disposing of dead animals found on my land?

Monday, March 4th, 2013

Question by Edd S: What safety measures do I need to take when disposing of dead animals found on my land?
I work for a company and we frequently find dead fox’s and other wild animals dead when they have been hit by a train or electrocuted. We have to bag these and dispose of these ourselves – what controls should we have in place to protect our staff? I know risk assess – but if you have some pointers this would be helpful.

Wear long handled surgical gloves and wash your hands/arms afterwards. If you get to them soon enough they don’t smell bad or aren’t that messy, but after a few days it can be pretty gross.

However, since they were probably healthy before they got hit by a train/electric wire, etc, most of the things (microbes and etc) that live in those dead animals are naturally all around us all the time, they are in the dirt, they are on your skin before you ever touched the animal. They moved inside the animal once the white blood cell count dropped because the heart stopped beating, but they aren’t going to move inside you. You’ve been exposed them already, and they can’t hurt a healthy human. (If you have cancer/HIV/pregnant/running a fever/open wounds/etc, then you aren’t healthy, and should avoid it.) If you were picked up animals that died of weird illnesses that you didn’t understand, (if you find a flock of dead chickens with no signs of trauma, for instance,) you’ll want to wear a full body suit and a self contained breathing system…

Use Styrofoam. It’s light, you can carve it with a bread knife, and takes latex paint well. Go to any insulation supplier and ask if they have any broken sections. They can’t sell them so they’re just waste.. I use them for my train layouts.

Take it to a good train shop in your area. If you don’t have one get a copy of Model Railroader and check the advertisers section. Over the years I’ve learned that children are into hard play with their trains. I was one until I learned that you can have just as much fun weathering and setting up dioramas and scenes.

I’m in need of a vintage Lionel expert to estimate the worth of my train.?

Sunday, November 4th, 2012

Question by Doug: I’m in need of a vintage Lionel expert to estimate the worth of my train.?
I have a vintage metal Lionel train set that I believe to be from the 1950’s and I’d like to know how much worth it has.
I have the entire set. It includes 1 “peacock” #10 engine in running condition, re-wired in the 80’s. 3 cars # 341 (observation) 339 (coach), and 332 (Rail-mail). All the cars and the engine have very minor nicks and scratches and brass oxidation but are capable of being used. I also have the original box that came with the set. The box is in relatively poor condition but the original printing is still there and looks great. And to top it all off I have the original instruction page, slightly torn, wrinkled, and yellowed, but readable. I hope that’s enough to base an estimate off. Thank you for your help 🙂

On the Lionel Polar Express G Gauge train set ;need to know where the battery compartment is located .?

Wednesday, September 12th, 2012

Question by Anteater400: On the Lionel Polar Express G Gauge train set ;need to know where the battery compartment is located .?
I bought this set at Target over a year ago; there are 6 or 8 phillips screws under the engine, but I don’t see any directions as to how to fit the C batteries in. Seems strange to have to open up all those screws each time you want to change batteries. Would appreciate someone’s help.

If you look on page 7 of the Owner’s Manual, there are instructions and diagrams explaining how to replace the batteries.

Click on the link below to open the .pdf file and you can view it there.

Hope that helps!

what type of resistor do i need for 19 and 15 volt power supply?

Wednesday, September 12th, 2012

Question by darpo1: what type of resistor do i need for 19 and 15 volt power supply?
I am connecting regular standard bulbs ( for model railroading) that are 12 volts (25-30 M-amps), however my power supply has 15 volts for DC and 19 for AC. Im going to connect them in parrallel using about 6 bulbs into a terminal block. ………..what size resisitor do i need? and should i connect only one resisitor for all 6 bulbs or each circuit should have its own .

thanks

Answer by Garth W
The easiest way to handle this is to use two silicon diodes rated for at least 1 amp and have a 1.5 volt drop each that will drop your 15 volts to 12 volts. I would full wave rectify the ac output and use 2-3 more diodes to drop the voltage further. I would not use a power resistor to divide the voltage.

WD-40 and a little bit of Steel Wool and a small toothbrush. CLR also works with these same tools.
