U-Bahn/ Metro in Berlin, Germany

the u-bahn is German for Subway or Metro. It serves the needs of the people underground but it goes above ground sometimes. There are three model trains that I know of. What are the models called? Filmed in the Summer of 2009 in HD. In Berlin, Germany. The things on the windows is not graffiti. It is the Brandenburg Gates. Almost all subway cars have them. It is rare to find windows without them…Average interval time between trains can be 5 to 10 minutes depending on the line during the day. During the evening the interval is a bit longer but not much longer…

Test Track: Lionel Metro North M7 (6-car set)

Lionel’s set commemorating Metro North Railroad’s 25th annivesary, with a train of M7 EMU’s. Yes, they’re short. Yes, they appear to be slightly oversize in all other respects (just like MTH’s RailKing subways). You know what? Until someone comes out with scale (or near scale)-length M7’s, these are the only ones out there. And that’s why I got ’em. Performance: Obviously the single-motored power car lacks the oomph to decisivley accelerate the full set without slipping. I guess Lionel didn’t test for realistic starting ability in a starter set. Oh well, at least it has no trouble pulling once the train gets underway. After the train got rolling, I didn’t touch the controller until I brought it to a stop for the last shot. The horn? Obviously recycled from some diesel. It’s not synthesized, but it’s also not an M7 horn. Lionel could have done better–they had Metro-North’s co-operation developing this set, it’s not rocket science getting a recording of an actual M7’s horn, especially if it’s the only sound effect you’re putting in the set. Geez, this is turning into a review. Well, at least the doors open and close somewhat smoothly. I suppose one could rig up a station platform (high-level, please–these trains don’t board from ground level platforms) that engages and moves the levers that open and close the doors. The headlights could use a fourth LED up top–a single one just doesn’t shine through the dual ports like it’s supposed to. And would it have cost that much

Los Angeles Metro Expo Line – Phase II Tour, Part 1

A speedy, time-lapse trip through the disputed rail right-of-way for Metro’s Expo line – currently being built from Downtown Los Angeles to Santa Monica. Starting about 6 blocks West of Robertson & Venice through West LA to the corner of Pico & Sawtelle! Yes, no kidding – this is West LA and it was shot on July 10 & 11, 2010. The homeowners around this part of the line (Cheviot Hills) are annoyed because a train is coming, so they decided to sue the city to stop it claiming it’s not “safe.” You be the judge – a massively wide right-of-way sitting unused and tunnels & bridges already in place from the last streetcar line we had here! Let’s hope these NIMBYs lose and the city wins. I made this film with a home brew steadycam, a Panasonic Lumix TZ-10 camera, Apple’s iMovie and a lot of walking. 😉 Please subscribe if you want to get notified of the next video update. French mainline steam; Swiss electric locomotive; Paris metro cars

Maybe you know Arthur Honegger’s composition "Pacific 231" – it’s a piece for large orchestra which describes the run of a big and fast steam locomotive. Well, the engine he had in mind was exactly the one which has been carefully reproduced by the famous Märklin company in 1919. One sample of these you see in the center of my image. The locomotive on the adjacent track is a Swiss railways class Ae 3/6 I. In the background there are some cars of the Paris Metro.

I took this image in an old engine shed at the station of Erkrath-Hochdahl (near Düsseldorf). The site has been converted into a small railway museum, and it’s the place where a group of enthusiasts and collectors of historic toy trains meets from time to time. The tin plate fans set up two extended make-shift layouts (in gauge 1 and gauge 0 respectively) and enjoy running their classic rolling stock. The meetings are open to the public.
