Monday, November 19th, 2012

Question by Werecatflame: Model train and track maintenance?
I have ordered a Lionel train set that should arrive by next week. This is going to be my first O scale train set so I was hoping for some information on how to keep everything working properly for many years to come. I also I noticed that I have some corrosion on a piece of my HO track I was wondering what I could do about this, and how I could prevent from happening in the future.

What sort of routine maintenance should I do to keep my n scale electric train engine running well?

Question by Ruggrock: What sort of routine maintenance should I do to keep my n scale electric train engine running well?
For example, should I put some 3-1 gear oil on the gears through the opening on the bottom? The gears are plastic, and I think it would be okay to put a little of that oil on them, but I’m not sure? Is there anything else I should do to keep it running well?

I don’t know anything about trains, but I can send you to a site that might be of help to you. It is the National Miniature Railroad Association.

I haven’t ran my Lionel trains since 1992. Can I run them right out of the box? Do they need any maintenance?

They should run just fine without much trouble (it may take a bit of coaxing to break them back in). However, a quick inspection to blow off/clean any dust/dirt within the movable/mechanical parts certainly would not hurt. Also, giving all of the moving parts (particularly the locomotive[s]) a quick shot of oil would probably be a good idea as well.
