Irish Sugar Beet Trains 2005

General Motors diesels power the final Irish Rail sugar beet campaign in November, 2005. These trains ran between the central loading facility at Wellington Bridge in southeast Ireland through Waterford to Limerick Junction, then reversed onto the Dublin-Cork mainline as far as Mallow where they entered a short branch line to the processing plant. This represented the last hurrah for high-density goods traffic on Irish rail, running on a line protected with the Electric Token system, semaphores, and manned level crossings. Motive power was single EMD JT22CW’s or paired JL-8/JL-18’s along with the last GL-8’s in service on IR.
