This guy claims he can help improve my training “game”…is he legit or is he a creep?

Question by : This guy claims he can help improve my training “game”…is he legit or is he a creep?
I was working out at another location when the guy approached me several weeks back. He supposedly knew I was a trainer by the way I looked, and dressed. He said I knew circuit training, and he wanted a workout buddy to help get him through it. I just said that I was finishing up and he left.

I said hey to him another day and he stopped and showed me an exercise. He stood on top of a stability ball and did some kettlebell flips in the air as well as raises. As he did this, he spoke to me about the game of training. He said he knew how to work the floor, he knew the psychology behind it all, he said he had all the exercises that would attract people to you. He apparently trains at a MMA gym. He apparently does photoshoots. He is VERY into himself, and said the other trainers there were jealous of him. He said all the guys in there are jealous of him, and that he would get into fights. He said he learned everything he knows from a bodybuilder in the area (John Rice?) and that he would teach it all to me if I did something in turn for him. Be his workout buddy. He said he needed a female workout buddy because he gets lazy training with guys. I was very hesitant but ended up saying I would be in there a week from that date at the same time.

I didn’t end up showing up. I stayed at my work location. Several there said something sounded fishy. I ran into him yesterday and he talked about his goals. He wants to get online. Train people online. He talks about how much money can be made online. He said I have the charimsa, I have the looks. He talked about himself more. How he wants to sing, act, and model as well (He’s from San Diego) and was talking about getting into Hollywood. He brought up videos he wanted to do and said I was welcome to do it. He wants to get on Youtube. He kept telling me to look at Zuzana on Youtube (I think she’s a sl*t) and kept exclaiming that she had 16 million views on one video. I mentioned how my last paycheck wasn’t cutting it and he asked why I didn’t transfer over to that gym (much larger and of the same chain) He showed me all the trainers on the wall and talked about who “had it” and what they were good at. He pointed out the guy “to know”. I know all the trainers at this location anyway…but he seemed to know his stuff. He sounds strange, and I know I must come off as real naiive…but he does seem to know his stuff. Especially when he randomly points out some floor type psychology. I gave him my email and said I would work out with him sometime. I am not going to give him my phone # and have no interest in his online videos.

What do you guys think?

How can I improve my head voice?

Saturday, January 28th, 2012

Question by Wicked Witch of the East Coast: How can I improve my head voice?
At my school, we are doing the musical “Guys and Dolls,” and I have been asked to audition for the part of Sarah Brown. I am aware that this part is hard and requires vocal training, which I have…but my head voice is nothing special. It’s weak and doesn’t extend very far up the scale without getting breathy. For example, I can hit E and F below high C without much difficulty, but after that it gets much harder. As Sarah, I would need to be able to hit G and A below high C and sustain them. Also, Sarah does a lot of singing in the middle range, where I would feel more comfortable breaking into my chest voice because my head voice decreases in volume.

How can I add those notes to my register and strengthen the quality of my head voice? (The audition is a month away, just btw.)
Um…thanks, but I was looking for something a little more specific? Like exercises, all that jazz.

Mechanical engineers: would my idea improve your skills?

Question by Erik: Mechanical engineers: would my idea improve your skills?
Did you feel like you did not get adequate hands-on training in school or from employers?

I have an idea that might really help engineers get that. Please let me know how helpful it would be.

Implementing this idea would greatly enhance employers’ ability to find qualified engineering talent, and help the world economy in general, I hope.

My idea essentially is to create one of the conditions that exist in the American software industry: ease of market entry and innovation. Having low barriers to entry has worked reasonably well for the US in software. I’m guessing that it would also work well for small scale manufacturing.

My idea would reduce barriers to innovation and quality for companies.

We need a national program that walks mechanical and manufacturing engineering university graduates through design and manufacturing case studies, with hands-on experience with a variety of manufacturing processes.

I wish I could have participated in such a program when I graduated college. My mechanical engineering university education was much too theoretical. Frankly, my ability to do real-world design engineering is limited.

Undergraduate engineering degrees are professional degrees in reality, if not officially. Other professional schools (e.g. law, business) use case studies, but engineers are expected to function without the benefit of a similar collection of experience. This must change.

Unlike software engineering university programs, mechanical engineering curricula typically offer inadequate chances for hands-on learning. I’m guessing that’s due to the cost of equipment, energy, materials, and liability insurance.

There is a TV show on the Discovery Channel called How It’s Made. Have you seen it? If so, imagine actually visiting the factories they show, instead of watching it on TV. Imagine being coached and doing each step of the process, singlehandedly manufacturing the product as much as possible. That’s basically what I’m looking for, for the manufacturing part of the training anyway. A discussion of the history and evolution of that process would be a really helpful addition, to understand why the process is set up the way it is.

It seems unlikely that private enterprise factory owners would permit students to actually handle their equipment. They sometimes will allow factory tours, but that’s not enough. Also, I suspect that few, if any, universities could afford to maintain their own set of factories. If I’m right, then this makes it very difficult for people to get the broad experience that would make them highly effective innovators.

We need one separate educational organization, funded by the U.S. government. That organization should purchase appropriate factories or equipment, and move them to suitable locations. It then would take American graduates and students from any U.S. university, and let students visit the factories that interest them. Each student would be trained to do each step of the manufacturing process.

Beyond that, the ideal institution I’m envisioning would also have physical specimens of various devices or parts, some being exceptionally well designed and some having flawed design. Each item would be accompanied by discussion of its history and the decisions that led to the design.

Likewise, describing examples of exceptionally good and bad manufacturing processes would be very enlightening.

Where applicable, students should also see examples of finished products that are very easy to maintain, as well as some that are difficult to maintain.

I don’t believe anything like this exists. I’ve been searching, and I haven’t found anything remotely like it.

Would this really help?

Many thanks for any replies you give here.

A lot of large corporations have a similar type of Intern Programs to help introduce Juniors and Seniors in school to the various industries.
Many large corporation provide “recruitment” type of tours for juniors and seniors where take them through their operations to see what is done and how they do it.
I am all in favor of any on-the-job training. This is where the students actually learn operations.

Help me improve myself?

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Question by Sam Raymond: Help me improve myself?
Okay, a couple of things before I start.

I am 14 years old and weigh 115 pounds. I am 5’7. What I want to get done by the end of summer is to be more fit, by getting stronger and with more endurance, (and it wouldn’t hurt to look pretty buff) and get good at running.

I have been going to the gym for about a year now, 5 days a week, and I’ve gotten pretty much no results. The only things I do are running, bicep curls, and Lat Pulldowns. The maximum I can do for bicep curls are 10 pounds, and I usually do 10 curls about 5 times.

For the Lat Pulldown, I can do 80 pounds and I also do that 10 times, about 5 times.

Can someone actually give me some kind of regimen, or anything I can follow that will give me the results I want? (Get strong, look buff)

Now for running. I’m signed up for Cross Country when I start high school next year, because running is really the only sport I have a chance of getting into. However, I need a lot of training.

The maximum miles I can run in one shot is 3 miles, and that’s going at a 9 mile pace.

The most I can run one mile is 7:00. I once ran a mile in 6:40 but that really killed me.

What I want is to be able to run at least 5 miles in at least 7:30, and run a mile in 6.
Can this be done by August 1? (The day of tryouts)

I’d appreciate it if you guys can help me with everything I asked.

I also don’t know that many technical terms for working out yet. (I don’t know what a “set” is, and stuff), so can you guys also tell me what all the technical words mean, so I can actually follow training regimens that you guys hopefully post?

Thanks, I know this seems like a lot, but I really need this.

Here’s a link to some pictures of me:
(Note I only get a six pack when flexing right after working out)

I usually use Slam in between CD’s, and with imp. slam don’t forget that you can cast it while moving, and since I use Glyph of Slam, it hits hard when I burst, and as for the buff that stacks 3 times, I think that is Lambs to the Slaughter which is a buff that gives you a stronger Mortal Strike after each one (3 max). So that is why I usually want to use MS on an opponent 2-3 times before I use colossus smash on them so that when I hit them with MS/HS combo then it hits them harder.
To be honest though, that is what I do less than half the time,

To get stronger lift more weight fewer times. For bicep curls for example, do use 12 or 15 pounds and do 5 curls 3 or 4 times. The times you do it are called sets. You should be able to find the definition of terms on the internet.

I’m not sure that in 5 weeks you can go from 3 miles at 9 minute mile pace to 5 miles at 7:30 pace. But to do it you first need to get endurance. You don’t say if you train regularly or don’t train at all but you need to start running regularly, at least 30 minutes, 4-6 times a week. If 3 mile sis the most you can run then I suggest you run 2 miles, walk 2 minutes and then run another 2 miles. Your goal is to run the 4 miles without a rest. When you can do that then run 5 miles, even if you need to run them at 10 minute mile pace. Once you can 5 miles regularly then you can focus on running faster.
