Most models are built of foam board which is white paper on two sides. It takes drawings, painting, or pasted on images. Depending on the thickness of the walls in scale, poster or tag board which is thin smooth cardboard, may be used. Doors are normally non-working and windows are drawn or occasionally cut out to represent glass. Narrow strips of balsa wood can be glued on for frames.
If you are talking more detail than a large building in a small space, then by selecting the right scale, you can use siding and architectural pieces from model railroading or doll houses.
