Question by Kaggy: What was your experience when you first picked up a guitar and starting playing?
I’m thinking about getting an electric guitar just so I can have a fun hobby to do. (and to annoy my mom at 4am) I just wanna know what the first few weeks are like when you first start playing. Because the closest thing to me having a guitar in my hands is Guitar Hero. I have no experience what so ever. I’ve heard that your fingers sometimes gets blisters and stuff o.O

give it your 100 percent and the fingers / blisters be damned

Would it be a bad idea to ask my cousin to give me his electric guitar and amp for a temporary time?

Thursday, December 27th, 2012

Question by zokay: Would it be a bad idea to ask my cousin to give me his electric guitar and amp for a temporary time?
I mean, he doesn’t uses it because hes not home for 5 days and in those 2 days he plays keyboard mostly, he has like 5 amp’s. I mean he NEVER uses the guitar.
I just want it to train on because i love guitars, I have an acoustic with broken neck, my dad will not buy me a guitar, he says he has other things to pay first, and I understand that.

sure, the worst he can say is no. there’s never a bad time to take up an instrument! good luck.

How long did it take you to become decent at guitar? Should I get a tutor?

Question by SVNA_S3VEN: How long did it take you to become decent at guitar? Should I get a tutor?
I accidentally hit delete instead of edit

Just starting playing electric guitar a few weeks ago, and want to know how long it took you to get the hang of it.

Also, think it would be best to get a tutor?

Best answer:

Answer by Johnny
Don’t get a tutor. I don’t actually remember how long it took me to get “good” at guitar, It just kinda happens on its own over time. I do remember being able to play a few songs in the first week I picked one up though. I was self taught(not by choice, no money for lessons) and I don’t regret it. At the time I wanted a tutor but I wouldn’t change that now. when you learn on your own I think you develop a better ear for things. Learn some basic chords and start practicing.

Question by Jerod: Does anybody have any advice on how to quickly perform power chords on electric guitar?
Like switch from an E to Dm with very little to no pause between? Like how can I train my fingers to do so quickly?

It takes patience and practice. The best tip I could give you is to learn all of your scales and chords and just practice. Pretty soon changing chords gets easier. Good luck =)

Can you begin learning guitar on an electric?

Wednesday, November 21st, 2012

Question by Westport: Can you begin learning guitar on an electric?
Is it any easier or harder to learn how to play on an electric Guitar. I have absolutely no musical skills. I have always wanted to learn how to play guitar particularly an electric.

Best answer:

Answer by Skwucky
I’ve been classically trained for eleven years, though I also play electric. The type of guitar isn’t what makes it hard. I find steel string acoustics harder to play. Classical guitars seem to be easiest to play, though their necks are too wide for some. Electrics aren’t any harder or easier to play to me unless you put on a really heavy gauge string which only makes it a little harder to bar chords and stuff, but you get used to it quickly.

In short, the type of guitar doesn’t make a huge difference in difficulty, but the style of music. Also, in any genre you have both easy and complicated songs. However, classical is many times more complicated than anything else. If you want to pursue a music career or want to major in music, I highly recommend you learn classical first. If you can play that, you can play anything. If you aren’t that serious about music, then just go straight to electric and get a good teacher. You can unwittingly get into a lot of bad playing habits if you’re self taught.
