I have an old Lionel train set that my parents bought me from the 50’s . I would like to expand the set but I’m not into trains much and people tell me I have to make sure I get the right GUAGE !?!?!?

No! Different electrical power grids. The U.S uses 120 volt 60 cycle, and the U.K. is 240 volt 50 cycle. You would have to change the motor to a 240 volt one.
