MARC Commuter Trains on the Brunswick Line

Friday, March 1st, 2013

On November 23, 2010 we catch the morning rush of MARC trains at two hot locations, Point of Rocks, MD and Dickerson, MD. We catch 3 different type of diesels from the roster, GP39H-2, GP40WH-2, and MP36PH-3C, including station stops and track speed trains, got to love the heavy throttle when pulling (excuse me…pushing) out of the station! [HD]奇跡の夜 小田急9000形と5200形、そしてJR113系 Odakyu Commuter Train in 2006

Thursday, November 22nd, 2012

Odakyu Electric Railway 9000 type ,5200 type commuter train and Japan Railway EAST 113 series at Fujisawa station 9000 type and 113 series are departuring at same time (4:00).

Short Hills – Erie-Lackawanna Commuter Train (1978)
electric trains

An Erie-Lackawanna Railroad commuter train set at Short Hills, New Jersey station. Earlier, it was the Lackawanna Railroad, later a New Jersey state authority. These electric train sets were introduced in 1928, and were still in use in the 1950s and 1960s. This is how my father commuted to his work in New York City, and how I went to New York (including summer jobs in the city).

We took one of these trains (usually 6 or 8 cars) from Millburn, Maplewood, or Short Hills station to Hoboken. (This is a weekend train.) To reach New York City, you took the Hudson Tubes (later PATH – Port Authority Trans-Hudson). In the 1950s, there were also ferries from Hoboken to Lower Manhattan.

Will the U.S. phase out commuter trains that use diesel and switch to electric trains in the future?

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Question by Pope Bend-A-Dick: Will the U.S. phase out commuter trains that use diesel and switch to electric trains in the future?
I noticed how all the commuter trains here in Massachusetts use diesel engines. Will they switch to overhead lines in the not so distant future?

Electrification is enormously expensive, to the extent that it’s only used on high-density lines. In this time of tight money, even transit agencies are suffering; any substantial capital undertaking would have to go before the state legislature, and to raise the money would mean issuing debt in the form of bonds. Given that paying these bonds would mean increased taxes, the taxpayers would effectively say, “No dice.”
