This seven-car diesel train set was the first German Trans Europ Express (TEE) train. It was class VT 11.5 of the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB). Now it is popularly known as VT 601, combining the old class designator with the its class number after 1968. I took the photo from a train going to Heilbronn, in the the Stuttgart station yard.
The initial TEE concept in 1956 was diesel train sets, so they could travel anywhere without regard to electrification or electric systems. VT 601 had two motor units (one at each end), three coaches, a dining/kitchen car, and a dining/bar car. The trains had a top speed of 140 kph (87 mph), later 160 kph (100 mph).
