The loco shed at Coonoor, the only functioning steam loco shed in South India. It almost makes you think you have travelled back in time when you see the ancient locomotives hissing steam and smoke. The yard came into existence in 1899 and workers here maintain the 12 engines — steam and bio-diesel — that power the NMR. The oldest locomotive is over 90 years old and the youngest is 55 — when the life of a steam locomotive is generally 25 years. Over the hill, literally, but still chugging along.
