British Railways English Electric Type 1 Bo-Bo class 20 diesel-electric locomotives number 20028 and 20147 of Toton TMD approach Helsby station on the Down Chester line with an empty steel train. Monday 10th June 1985

Helsby Junction signal box is located between platforms 2 and 3 on Helsby station, and is a London and North Western Railway Type 4 design fitted with a 45 lever London and North Western Railway Tumbler frame which opened in 1900, replacing and 1870s-built signal box located by the down main line north of Rake Lane overbridge. The signal box was heavily, but simpathetically rebuilt in the early 2000’s

The train is passing by Helsby Junction signal box 3 signal with 15 signal between the Up and Down Chester lines. Above the second wagon can be seen 42 signal (down chester home 2) and in the distance beyond the bridge carrying the Helsby West Cheshire Junction to Mouldsworth Junction line is 43 signal (down chester home 1).
3 signal (up chester home 2) is carried on a tubular post.
15 signal is a London Midland and Scottish Railway 1941 type standard dwarf signal which applies to setting back along the Down Chester line to 16 signal, and setting back from the Down Chester line to the Down Refuge Siding or to the Exchange Sidings
