Electric transformers converting voltage ?

Question by Cassie B: Electric transformers converting voltage ?
A “step-down” transformer is to be used to convert an ac voltage of 120 V down to 6 V to power an electric train. If there are 500 turns in the primary (input) coil, how many turns should be in the secondary coil?

Best answer:

Answer by jholcepl
solve for the ratio

120/6 = 500/X x=secondary windings

cross multiply

120X=6 * 500

120X=3000

x=25 turns
