Polar Express & Thomas Sharing the same Track

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

My demonstration of running one conventional and one TMCC train on the same line at the same time (“transitional mode”). You are limited by the conventional train (Thomas in this video) because if you change voltage that effects both engines so you don’t do that, but the TMCC remote let’s you slow down the TMCC train if needed. Normally I run both trains slower, but for this video, it was more challenging at faster speeds. I estimate track voltage at around 12 volts which is enough to keep both trains moving at a good speed. Ideally, you want just enough voltage to run both trains, with the conventional one not flying off the tracks when it’s by itself.

Classic Standard Gauge Trains – Volume Two

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Here’s the second video showing original standard gauge trains in action on a double reversing loop layout. The Lionel No. 38 is almost a hundred years old, yet still hammers its way around the track, pulling an orange consist of Nos. 32, 34, 35 and 36 early Lionel passenger cars. The Ives 3235 is pulling a consist of cars 170, 171, and 172. I have been looking for a green 171 for about ten years, but all I can find is the brown/tan colour. The Ives runs the smoothest of all the old trains, due to its cast iron frame and unstoppable motor. A word about the music – these trains were the “Plain Janes” of their era – no State Set or Blue Comet here, just affordable trains for lucky kids in the first quarter of the 20th century. (YouTube has since shut down my soundtrack due to “copyright infringement” of Bobby Darin’s music – I’m sure I was doing them a lot of damage) Notice this time I let the trains speak for themselves, no artificial motor noises. Hope you enjoy the result.

See the good, the bad and ugly as I dig deep into my Thomas & Friends treasure chest. A video covering one of the most common questions I am asked and details part of my Thomas collection. I hope the younger Thomas fans can see clearly just how good the ERTL Thomas & Friends range was.
