How is electric power transmitted to trains with the overhead cable?

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Question by Snow C: How is electric power transmitted to trains with the overhead cable?
Since the overhead cable is only one contact, and any circuit needs to be closed, where does the current flow out of?

Best answer:

Answer by Marc Robertson
The circuit has the live power on the overhead cantilevers and is grounded by the rails which complete the circuit. This way there is no live power and ground right next to each other that humans or animals can be killed by.

Ironically, every locomotive is electrically powered. Most locomotives are diesel electric because a traditional transmission won’t work. Basically the power is fed from a huge diesel motor into a huge generator. The power goes through a drive which controls the power. Then it goes to multiple traction motors simular to electric trains.

Correction: Every diesel locomotive is electrically powered, China still runs steam powered locomotives…

3rd rail electric trains + Snow = Mega Sparks!

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

When snow gets on the electric rail melts and refreezes, it forms a glaze that the high current electricity vapourises. Amazing sparks and arcing create a mini fireworks display. These are hot sparks though, some are pink-purple tint (12000K). This was taken onboard a recently Hitachi motored Class 465 on the SouthEastern railway. Recorded during the historical London snow falls of early December 2010. Calling at London Bridge and London Canon Street.

Just some clips of my train layout. Its small now but each year it grows a little. I hope to eventually have larger area to work with and have more realistic landscape (because right now its perfectly flat!) and obviously more trains running at the same time. Anyways enjoy!
